Digital Extremes’ Warframe has been in closed beta since October of last year. As of PAX East this weekend, the game is now in open beta, so gamers of all stripes can now participate in the free-to-play title without having to scrounge for a closed-beta invite.
Warframe is designed as a co-op third person shooter, in which players control a member of the Tenno—ancient warriors who’ve awoken from centures of sleep to find themselves in a war against a race of militarized humans who want nothing more than to exterminate them.
Players can experience the game alone or band together in groups of four to participate in co-op raids to locate ancient artifact. Either way, players will earn artifacts and gear that allow them to upgrade their Warframe and weapons.
The title recently saw the release of a new patch which added a pet system, a global chat, two new Warframes, and a revamp of the game’s mod that allows players to earn skill cards and design their character according to their personal play style. Details of that can be found here.
“The road has been wild, but through the fixing, the breaking, the smashing, and the rebuilding, the Warframe community has supported us and it’s heartwarming to see their love for the game matches our own,” said Steve Sinclair, the game’s creative director. “Free-to-Play has reached a level of acknowledgement within the gaming community that now demands higher level production values and in-depth gaming experiences. We’re delivering that with Warframe and if the success of the Closed Beta is any indication, it’s well on its way to pushing the Free-to-Play frontier into the next generation.”
