Posted on October 21, 2013, Mike Sharkey Warning: Windows 8.1 Hates Your Mouse
Hey Valve, hurry up with that SteamOS, will ya?
Microsoft is once again demonstrating its near contempt for PC gaming in the form of an update for Windows 8 that makes playing many games with your mouse an exercise in frustration.
Reddit poster dgonreddit warns PC gamers running Windows 8 to avoid updating to Windows 8.1. The update fundamentally changes how the system reads mouse input, and in doing so, it makes high DPI gaming mouses unusable in most games that don’t use Raw Input or DirectInput mouse data.
Microsoft has yet to address the issue through Windows 8 Support, but it does note that users can revert back to Windows 8 from 8.1 with a system restore.
For those of you who would prefer an 8.1 mouse fix now, the creator of the popular MarkC mouse fix, Reddit poster Mark Cranness, has posted The MarkC Windows 8.1 + 8 + 7 Mouse Acceleration Fix.
Some of PC gaming’s biggest names, including Minecraft’s Markus “Notch” Persson and Valve’s Gabe Newell labeled Windows 8 bad for PC gaming before it even launched. MS certainly didn’t do anything to quell those fears with the 8.1 update.
