Love it or hate it, Watch Dogs is not a game planned as a standalone title. Even if Ubisoft hadn’t gone on record about making it a franchise, the concept is still far too promising to leave alone forever. While Ubisoft has yet to confirm that Watch Dogs 2 is in the works, creative Jonathan Morin recently discussed what he’d like to include in the sequel.

“When you start a new project [and new IP], it’s a blank page and everything you do is what you want to do,” Moring told gamesTM. “With a sequel, there is more pressure to push a brand forward and we now have to appeal to fans in a new way… You have to carry on taking risks.”

What exactly does mean mean for future Watch Dogs installments? Morin is light on specifics, but he does say he wants players to use the Profiler mechanic to create their own stories within the game world. In fact, Morin wants his team to avoid filling in too many narrative points so players can follow their own experiences. “We want to allow them to play with a very different state of mind, not wrap up concepts for them,” Morin explains. It’s a minor point, but speaking personally, it was an issue I had with Watch Dogs that would be great if resolved.

Morin also notes that ideas which were considered for Watch Dogs but had to be dropped are now back on the table. At the same time, he adds that criticism of Watch Dogs is being taken into account, instead of assuming financial success means the game was perfect. “I don’t think Watch Dogs is perfect in any way and there’s a lot of room for improvement,” he continues, “But you don’t always see this when you ship a game. We deliver what we believe the brand should be at the time. But afterward, when you cool down after five and a half years [of development] and take your vacations and people play the game, certain elements become clear. They let you continue to bring what you envision to the next level with the fans included this time, which is where I think it really gets interesting.”
