Two podcasts featured in Watch Dogs: Legion, recorded by British journalist Helen Lewis, are being removed from the game, following revelations of statements she has historically made about transgender people.
Lewis had written an opinion piece in 2017 criticizing changes to UK law that would simplify the process of changing your legal gender, stating that "Being a woman or a man is now entirely in your head," and that "In this climate, who would challenge someone with a beard exposing their penis in a women’s changing room?"
Ubisoft claims it was not aware of the statements until after the game development was completed, and that "Neither Ubisoft nor the game reflect this journalist’s viewpoints, the development team worked with an external producer to select speaker profiles for these podcasts and were not aware of the controversy at the time of booking or recording."
Ubisoft has also committed to reinforcing its background checks on talent featured within its games going forward.
The two podcasts featuring Lewis will be replaced with new content, presumably in a future update. Ubisoft has faced a lot of criticism for its corporate culture in recent times, with several top executives departing the company following allegations of abuse and sexual harassment.
