Could the Marvel universe actually be the basis for a great MMO? I wouldn’t have thought so, given how I feel generally about DC Universe online, but watching the developer diary for Marvel Heroes has just turned me into a true believer. The game’s story will be written by Brian Michael Bendis, possibly the greatest storyteller working in mainstream comics. His Powers series remains one of the definitive deconstructions of the super hero genre while also making for excellent crime fiction, and his incredibly prolific output for Marvel’s official titles, especially Ultimate Spider-Man, have been the only reason many adult comic fans, long grown out of mainstream super hero titles, keep coming back to see what’s going on.
In addition, Marvel Heroes will also feature the voices of several actors who defined the onscreen versions of classic Marvel characters, including (though still uncredited) what sounds a lot like Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor Xavier. Best of all, the plot revolves around Doctor Doom’s taking possession of the Cosmic Cube, which means Marvel Heroes is shaping up to be something like the Marvel movie we’ll probably never have. Thanks to the clusterf*ck over character rights resulting from how Marvel licensed their titles prior to producing their own slate of filmes, Marvel/Disney is currently barred from using characters related the X-men, Fantastic Four, or Spider-Man series. Seeing that rectified in video game form is awesome.
Enjoy the diary.
