Posted on August 23, 2011, Ross Lincoln Watch This Portal Fan Film With Impressive SFX
I’m not gushing over this like the rest of the Internet. Don’t get me wrong – this is some very professional work with high quality effects. But like all fan fiction films, it takes itself way, way, way too seriously and as a result calls unwanted attention to its flaws. Maybe it’s a consequence of having too much ambition on a shoestring, but the undeniably talented people behind films like this often have difficulty doing more than one or two things excellently at the same time. The smart play is to go the rout of Alive In Joburg, the short film Neill Blomkamp made in 2005 that he later turned into District 9.
Whatever the culprit, while the visual effects and props, like the portal gun, look spectacular, the fight choreography does not. It’s clumsy and poorly shot and just looks like a student film. But anyway, enough of my armchair producing. Check out Portal: No Escape.
