If you haven’t yet seen Drew Goddard’s hilarious The Cabin In The Woods (written by Joss Whedon!!!), you’ve deprived yourself of one of 2012′s best films. Mismarketed as a genuine horror film rather than a brutal comment on the nature of horror film enjoyment, it should have been a much bigger hit. Seriously, if you love Evil Dead, if you love meta fiction, see it immediately.
If you have seen it, then you’ll be as depressed as I am that at one point, there were plans for Left 4 Dead DLC based on the film, plans that never came to fruition. Goddard revealed that during a recent IAMA on Reddit, noting that it was the untimely bankruptcy of MGM, which caused CITW to be delayed by a couple of years, that kiboshed it.
“We actually were going to do a downloadable L4D2 expansion pack, where you’d fight in the Cabin world, but then MGM went bankrupt so the delay squashed it,” he told Reddit. “But the people at Valve were still cool enough to let us use some of their monsters to fill the cubes in the background (I had a lot of cubes to fill.)” He’s referring here to the warhouse full of monsters revealed in the third act. There’s a ton of references to classic films, some noncopyright-infringing, others square on. Those references really pay off later when [REDACTED, SPOILER].
As for the DLC itself? It sounds like it would have been amazing. “By the way — the game was gonna be amazing. You were gonna be able to play in both the upstairs “Cabin in the Woods” world and the downstairs “facility” world with all the monsters. Believe me, I HATE all video games based on movies, they always suck, but porting Cabin into Left For Dead felt like the right fit. It pains me that it didn’t happen.”
This makes me really sad. Luckily, L4D modding is off the chain, so I have no doubt someone is going to make this a reality soon. Right? RIGHT?
