What's next for Helldivers 2 now the bots and bugs have been destroyed?

Now that players have managed to contain the bugs and completely eradicate the Automatons, Arrowhead is calling the latest Helldivers 2 operation a success. But given that we've completely lost an entire enemy type, where does that leave the future of the game?

"You did it, Helldivers," said Arrowhead on X. "Operation Swift Disassembly was a success! With the bots eradicated and bugs contained, the galaxy is free once more." They stopped short of saying what we could expect next from the game, and completely removing Automatons from the game seems like a pretty surprising move, even for a game that is essentially a huge community role-playing adventure controlled by a single DM.

I think the reality is this is unlikely to be the last we've seen of them. While it's yet to be properly understood, the entire universe may reset on a regular cadence, much as it did in the first game, and at the very least, we've also still got the outstanding questions over the Illuminate, who have yet to make themselves seen in Helldivers 2.

It'll be interesting to see where Helldivers 2 goes next. It's certainly unique in its pacing and storytelling, with players seemingly dictating the cadence of the adventure rather than living by a set schedule, and it really lends itself to a sense that anything can happen.
