We’ve already heard that Windows 9 could be announced as early as this week, but now it seems Windows 8 users may get it for free. According to Microsoft Indonesia president Andreas Diantoro, Windows 8 will automatically update to the new operating system upon release. That being said, it’s not entirely clear whether North American users will gain the same benefit.
This isn’t the first Microsoft representative calling the operating system Windows 9. Microsoft has previously codenamed this project as Threshold, and suggested it may not receive a numerical title. But with two Microsoft presidents making public statements about the software, it’s pretty safe to say that Windows 9 is exactly what the name entails.
Whatever Threshold is, a preview edition is expected to be unveiled tomorrow. Whether the upgrade also applies to Windows 7 users wasn’t clear, but considering the free upgrade likely responds to Windows 8′s lackluster reception, I’m guessing it’s specific to the latest platform.
