Posted on September 11, 2013, Mike Sharkey Winter is Pixelated: Freeware 8 Bit Game of Thrones
The music and the ability to sick Jon Snow’s dire wolf on a Wildling are fantastic, but here’s what I really love about the freeware 8 bit Game of Thrones just released by amateur Spanish developer Abel Alves: there are four different playable levels, and based on the official screenshots, one of them evidently deals with the torture of turncoat Theon Greyjoy.
If you’ve read George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire books (less so if you’ve seen the HBO series), you know that Theon gets what he deserves for betraying the Starks. It’s as if Martin understood how much readers grew to venomously hate Theon and gave them exactly what they wanted (and then some). That’s why it’s laugh-out-loud funny that, of all the dramatic events that take place in the fantasy world of Westeros, Alves apparently chose transforming Theon into Reek as one of his levels. Classic.
Download Game of Thrones: The 8 Bit Game for free on Alves’ website. After you’ve taken it for a spin, come back and let me know what Tyrion Lannister’s special ability is (drinking wine, hurling coins, snarky comments?).
