Posted on February 19, 2014, Mike Sharkey Wolfenstein Release Date Announced, Doom 4 Beta Teased
Bethesda pinned a May 20 release date (May 23 in Europe) on Wolfenstein: The New Order this morning and slipped a major surprise into the announcement: everyone who pre-orders will be invited to the “Doom” beta.
As in Doom 4. As in one of the most anticipated and speculated about games of the past decade.
Officially, id Software announced Doom 4 in May of 2008. From there, it quickly became rumor mill fodder, with id Software refusing to share any specific details or a release date. Then, just last year, Bethesda finally revealed the cause of the long, news-free wait: Doom 4 was a mess and in 2011 the publisher sent the development team back to the drawing board.
“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” Bethesda marketing guru Pete Hines said in a statement. “As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know.”
Evidently, Bethesda is finally just about ready to talk Doom 4, or simply ‘Doom’ as it’s referred to in today’s Wolfenstein press release. For now, this is all Bethesda is willing to share:
“Although you’ll receive the DOOM beta key code with your copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order, the DOOM beta won’t begin until a later, yet-to-be announced date. We will contact you with news and updates surrounding the start of the DOOM beta via the email address provided during the key code redemption process.”
We’ll keep you posted, and in the meantime, monitor the just launched Wolfenstein/Doom beta site for additional info.
