The culmination of the Mists of Pandaria storyline is at hand with today’s supersized World of Warcraft Patch 5.4. Dubbed “The Siege of Orgrimmar” for reasons we’ll get to in a minute, this new content is the last major addition to the game before the next expansion.
Wait, you say! What next expansion? The one we expect to be announced at BlizzCon this November. Wait wait wait, you say! No new content between now and whenever the next expansion launches? The expansion that hasn’t been announced yet or launched into Closed Beta or Open Beta? Yes, that one.
Though there is plenty to do in this release, it likely won’t hold the attention of MMO players for the next 6 to 9 months before the next expansion lands. And in that time we’ll be seeing the release of EverQuest Next Landfall and possibly The Elder Scrolls Online. Blizzard knows this, so we’ll see what they have in mind to keep players active when they make the expansion announcement.
If you are looking for a distraction until the big reveal at BlizzCon, here’s a quick recap of what is new with today’s patch.
The Siege of Orgrimmar
This is the big raid content of the patch. Garrosh Hellscream, leader of the Horde, destroys the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, the main quest hub of the expansion not to mention the cultural center of Pandaria. And then taunts all of Azeroth to come take him on at the Horde capital of Orgrimmar in a bid to take down the realm’s biggest heroes and take over everything. Don’t worry, you can still quest in the Vale, but things will be quite different.
Fourteen different raid encoutners are coming with the patch. A good chunk take place in Pandaria beneath the now desecrated Vale. Then the next set takes players to the gates of Orgrimmar where they must face down “a mecha-scorpion with a laser-mounted tail, flamethrower mouth, a drill and a sawblade for arms, and many, many cannons.” The rest of the encounters take place beneath the Horde capital, but have a distinct Pandaren influence.
