The best thing about January, even for a casual wrestling fan, is the Royal Rumble, so it's the perfect time to announce WWE 2K24 - and it's shaping up to feature some interesting returns for fan-favourite match types, along with improvements to existing modes such as the Royal Rumble and Backstage Brawl.
According to Bryan Williams and Lynell Jenkins from 2K, this year's outing will feature the return of the Casket Match, made famous by lockerroom veteran The Undertaker, along with other "extreme rules" style matches such as an Ambulance Match and the Gauntlet Match. We've got a full breakdown of the new match modes below;
Returning to a WWE 2K24 is the iconic Casket Match, which was notably popularized by WWE legend The Undertaker - meaning long-time armchair bookers can now figuratively and literally bury wrestlers they wish. The match will likely be singles mode only, although that remains unconfirmed - personally, I am hoping we also see the Buried Alive version of this match.
The Ambulance Match is a variant of the Casket Match now that I think about it. Yeah, replace the casket with an ambulance, allowing you to dispatch your opponent to the nearest medical facility in order to win.
2K24 also introduces Gauntlet Matches, a gruelling Iron Man against successive waves of new opponents, that usually last 30 or 60 minutes. Hopefully we also see the tag team variant of this, made famous by The Rockers back in the late 80s, with the singles variant notably being put on the map by Bret Hart and Ric Flair back in 1993.
Special Guest Referees
Nothing generates hype for a feud-ending match than a Special Guest Referee, and finally, it's back in WWE 2K24. The assigned special guest dons referee attire, departing from previous iterations, which, disappointingly, had them in regular ring attire. I just hope Mick Foley has his ref stripes drawn on with felt-top pens.
Improved Backstage Brawl
In addition to existing match types like the Casket Match, the game showcases enhanced versions of familiar modes. The Improved Backstage Brawl now incorporates more interactable objects, environmental hazards, and weapons and supports up to 4 players, which is a huge enhancement over the previous iterations we've seen.
Improved Royal Rumble
With the Rumble just around the corner, the online component of the match has had a timely update, now accommodating up to 8 online players in 30-man Royal Rumble matches.
2K24 is also celebrating four decades of the marquee WrestleMania Pay-Per-View (I still refuse to call them "Premium Live Events"... PLEase..) with a $120 Years of Wrestlemania Edition that includes legendary WWE Superstars such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and of course, The Undertaker. You can't have a casket match without Taker, after all.
On the cover of the standard edition is Cody Rhodes, with the deluxe edition featuring Bianca Belair and Rhea Ripley. Pre-orders for the game are now live, with the base version costing $69.99 and the Deluxe Edition, including the season pass bundle and Nightmare Family Pack, costing $99.99.
WWE 2K24 will be released on the 8th of March 2024 on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC.
