The Xbox One has been outsold by the PS4 for the eight consecutive month in the United States.

That, at least, is the indication of figures recently released by the market research firm NPD. According to the company, Microsoft’s console actually saw a fairly dramatic boost in sales during August; selling almost double the number of units that it did in July. This increase could likely be attributed to the release of Madden NFL 15, which was available as part of an Xbox One bundle.

That said, the PS4 still clung to the number one spot on the hardware charts thanks, in part, to releases like Diablo III: Reaper of Souls and The Last of Us: Remastered, both of which performed well for Sony’s console. Even with the PS4 still on top however, Microsoft responded positively to the month’s sales.

“Xbox One sales are on a positive trajectory, nearly doubling sales in August in the U.S. compared to July due in part to strong demand for the Xbox One Madden NFL 15 bundle,” said the company. “We’re looking forward to bringing the best value bundles, incredible offers like the ‘Buy a Console, Get a Game Free’ promotion running now, and more great games as we gear up for the launches of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto V, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.”

It’s too soon, of course, to tell which direction September will lean, but we’d be willing to bet that Destiny’s sales will likely be one of the determining factors in whether or not the PS4 can claim its ninth month as the king of the gaming mountain.
