Microsoft today unveiled its eighth generation gaming console and successor to the Xbox 360: the Xbox One. The new console will launch worldwide “later this year,” slated for Q4 2013.
This puts Microsoft’s console in direct competition with Sony’s, as the PlayStation 4 is also scheduled for a Q4 2013 release. The previous console generation saw the PS3 release in November 2006, one year after the Xbox 360, which released in November 2005. Despite Microsoft’s head start, a January 2013 report suggested that lifetime worldwide PlayStation 3 shipments have surpassed those of the Xbox 360.
The Xbox One’s revealed release window is in line with rumors that previously suggested that Microsoft was targeting a holiday 2013 release.
Which console will you be buying this holiday season? Both? Neither?
