The Xbox One’s first week of Japanese sales have yielded less than stellar results.
That, at least, would be an easy conclusion to draw from a recent report putting the console’s total week one sales at a mere 25,000 units sold. While this still put it at the number one spot on of the country’s hardware charts for the week, it’s still an underwhelming number when you consider that the PlayStation 4 and the Wii U both sold more than 300,000 units in the same space of time when they first launched in the region.
While likely disappointing to Microsoft, the Xbox One’s soft initial sales are arguably not much of a surprise. The Xbox 360 suffered from similar difficulties establishing a player base in Japan. In fact, sales for the console eventually became so dire that some retailers in the country eventually stopped stocking it at all. We will, of course, have to wait and see if the Xbox One in Japan winds up being a long term flop. That said, the early signs aren’t looking good.
