Now granted, that’s the Android 2.3-running phone sans everything, without a carrier and without the inevitable carrier subsidies that make the phone a whole lot cheaper if you agree to the standard two-year contract.
But that’s a bit of an insane price, and to be honest, I’m going to weigh in and say that it’s not accurate; or at least, the carrier subsidies are going to greatly reduce it. Sony was letting its Xperia 1 go for $800 when you ordered it without carrier from its website back in 2008, so this tag isn’t entirely without precedent — but it is pretty stupid if the price is anywhere near this (or even 50 percent of it) when Play launches and you can get it on a contract.
The Play is trying to provide stronger gaming on a mobile phone, but even a gold-plated slide-down gamepad isn’t going to pull customers from a $199 iPhone at this price. Although, Sony does have a history of overestimating what the gaming community is willing to shell out for its hardware.
