If you thought the commercialization of Angry Birds had gotten ridiculous, you ain’t seen nothing yet. The world’s most popular game about birds launching themselves at pigs has been turned into a theme park which will open in Finland this Summer. I think we can safely say at this point that Rovio will happily attach its intellectual property to anything.
It’s not going to be its own self-contained attraction, but will instead be tacked onto Finland’s Särkänniemi Adventure Park as a magical place of wonder called Angry Birds Land. So far, we can only speculate as to the kind of nonsense that’ll go on inside, but sneak peek photographs are scheduled to appear between now and the grand opening. Meanwhile, those of you with a penchant for melodrama can make plans to kill yourselves in time for the unveiling.
“Our goal is to motivate the fans, both adults and children, to exercise and enjoy the outdoors,” said Rovio merchandising EVP Harri Koponen. Incidentally, Koponen has the easiest job in the world, apparently having to just say “yes” to every idea that gets passed under his nose.
Angry Birds has been featured on shirts, in toys, board games, Halloween costumes and more. Rovio’s definitely milking the cow for all it’s worth, and one wonders exactly when they’ll stop. Perhaps they can work with Newt Gingrich to build an Angry Birds Moonbase.
