I don’t normally play hockey video games, but I think that’s about to change this year. And that’s because there’s a whole new kind of rise to stardom possible in NHL 12, one that I honestly never imagined would happen in a sports game.
You can create a woman character in this game.
This came about because a 14-year-old girl named Lexi Peters, who plays hockey, wrote a letter to EA Sports saying it’s unfair that female hockey players the world over can’t be represented in the game.
“Lexi’s letter was a wake-up call,” NHL 12 lead producer David Littman told the Globe and Mail. “Here’s a growing audience playing our NHL game and we hadn’t done anything to capture them.”
They got permission from the NHL to make the addition of a female option in the game’s player creator, and s–t got real real, son. And they made Lexi the default model for female characters.
And now, when NHL 12 hits tomorrow, you’ll be able to play virtual hockey as a lady. And that is a great thing.
