One of the more frustrating things about F2P MMOs is the ability for players to purchase victory by using real world marketplaces to acquire good and equipment free players must tediously grind to get. (Granted, this is solid business, since the marketplace earns the developer money). So how to balance things out? The makers of War Z have settled on a method that makes me want to hi five but must surely drive people nuts – take away your purchased items if you die. Cinemablend has the scoop via an interview with Hammerpoint Interactive’s Alex Josef, who told them:
Yes, you’ll lose what you have in your backpack when you die – both in Normal and Hardcore modes. And yes, if you bought something using real money, you’ll lose that item as well. This is a price you’ll have to pay.
We’ve discussed that a lot and at the end decided that this will provide a pretty good incentive for players to either be extra cautious while playing, or just not spend too much money in the game and, instead, try to procure all items by finding them in the game world.
I’ve nothing much to add to this except ‘cool’.
