So your video game franchise is doing pretty well, huh. But do you have a movie?
For some reason, big game franchises need tie-in films of some kind. And if they can’t spawn a god-awful live-action adaptation, well, there damn well better be an animated movie. For examples, see: Halo, Dead Space, Xenosaga and now:
EA just announced via press release that it has teamed with FUNimation Entertainment to create a Mass Effect anime film. Why anime, you ask? Apparently Mass Effect is a bigger deal in Japan than I originally assumed, according to this Kotaku story. Also: fanboys love anime for some reason.
From the press release, it sounds like we can expect the movie to expand on side information and widen the Mass Effect universe without really encroaching on the primary story found in the games. Here’s a quote from the press release:
‘Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us,’ said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer for the Mass Effect series.
Production on the Mass Effect anime movie has already started, and it’s expected to be available next year in video and digital formats. Remember to update your Netflix queues.
