Gun related crime and deaths in the US are a big political topic currently, and it's one issue that Professor Jospeh DeLappe is trying to highlight using a mod he has created for Grand Theft Auto V.
The mod causes NPC's to shoot and kill each other each day, but the mod has been designed so that the number of NPC's that kill each other that day reflects the number of gun crimes commited in the US that year. So each day the figure goes up, and so does the amount of killing and carnage in the game.
So far, there have been 7,165 gun related killings in the US this year, a statistic that Professor DeLappe hopes will be highlighted by the mod.
When you see those numbers get beyond the thousands, it’s very hard to realise what that translates to in actuality. I lived for quite some time in Nevada, it's very much a gun state. I remember going to a coffee shop to get a latte and walking past a guy at the table and he's got a pistol sticking out of his waistband. It's scary.
When the mod resets at midnight, the killing restarts and soon the streets are littered with corpses, each day more than the previous.
The creator of the mod hopes that by using a game like Grand Theft Auto, which has a reputation for causing violence through video games, that it could instead be seen as a force for change.
It's just a way of ironically using the very systems that people think are contributing to violence and putting something out there that perhaps considers the entire situation from a different angle.
The mod is being streamed live every day on Twitch, and you can watch it by clicking here.
