File Description

Remember back at the start of Half Life 2, when the Metropolice knock you out and Alyx comes to the rescue? Well, this storyline assumes that Alyx never showed up, and that you ended up in a Combine "Re-Education facility" instead. You have now been there 13 days and nights. The Combine have been performing tests upon you, in the form of virtual reality simulations. For the first twelve days of your captivity these tests seemed relatively benign. Health assessments, basic reflex tests, that sort of thing. However, as you may know, the simulation dished out on Day 13 was a series of brutal combat scenarios, and even as you wind up back in your cell on the evening of Day 13, you wonder if this is really only the beginning, and how much further the Combine will push you. What else could they want to test? Will you ever escape? What will happenwhen you wake up on DAY 14?

DAY 14
------

A single-player mission for Half Life 2.

THE STORY SO FAR
-------------------------------

Remember back at the start of Half Life 2, when the Metropolice knock you out
and Alyx comes to the rescue?

Well, this storyline assumes that Alyx never showed up, and that you ended up
in a Combine "Re-Education facility" instead.

You have now been there 13 days and nights.

The Combine have been performing tests upon you, in the form of virtual reality simulations.

For the first twelve days of your captivity these tests seemed relatively benign.
Health assessments, basic reflex tests, that sort of thing.

However, as you may know, the simulation dished out on Day 13 was a series of brutal
combat scenarios, and even as you wind up back in your cell on the evening of Day 13,
you wonder if this is really only the beginning, and how much further the Combine will push you.

What else could they want to test?

Will you ever escape?

What will happen.........when you wake up........

......on DAY 14?

NOTICE
------

This scenario contains custom voice acting, and there is some coarse
language, especially from "Bob" (as I call him). You have been warned.

Authors Notes:
--------------

I started Day14 largely in response to the huge amount of email I got about
Day13. I'm hoping I've done something different.

Even though I think that this has been a step forward for me in map quality --- I have a feeling that some people will not like Day 14 as much, because I've tried as hard as I can to make an "old-skool" puzzle, at least in one part. However I hope that the hate that this will cause in one group of people, will be balanced by the love it creates in another. Some of you are going to get horribly stuck, I can guarantee it. This is a real puzzle.

You see, I am a lover of old games. Old games which were genuinely hard, but didn't rely on testing reflexes and hand-eye co-ordination in order to be hard. Most of todays (first person) games, even when hard, tend to cover you in cotton wool, I feel - they lead you where you have to go at all times, there is always something telling you exactly what to do, and it's all a bit "go here, do this. repeat". In at least one part of Day14, I believe I have changed this.

You can't use cheats to get past the puzzle in Day 14. There are only two ways to get past it -- one of them is to solve it. The other, I'm sure anyone with any brains can work out --- and I can't stop this, but it means you'll miss some of the mission.

You're actually going to have to think, and work out what the hell you have to do. There are definately more than enough clues.

The battle after the puzzle is more linear, but you know, I had to reward the player who completes the puzzle with a big fight ;)

Enjoy.

*If you like the puzzle in Day 14, go grab yourself a copy of
"Out Of Order" which is freely available from Hungry Software, and
is one of the finest (and hardest) adventure games I have ever played.
Hilarious too. Ranks up with Monkey Island. The puzzle in Day 14 is an
adaptation of one puzzle from Out of Order*

KNOWN BUGS
----------

On slower PC's - the intro part of map 3 might go slightly wrong .... I used a pointcamera to simulate the player getting up from the floor, and it is controlled by a timer. Unfortunately on my slower test PC the timer takes longer to fire. I'm not sure how to fix this, because it works perfectly on all my other test machines. There isn't even much else going on in the scene at the same time, so I'm not even sure what is making this one timer go slower on slower PC's. If anyone can help me here, please email me! This bug, even if it happens, does not stop the map working.

I've tried to clip off everywhere that the player can get stuck, but I've no doubt someone out there will find somewhere new to jam themselves. Emails about sticky points are appreciated.
