Todesangst introduces the new sinister character Dr. Jack Newell, expert chaos theory mathematician and Director of Black Mesa R&D. Gordon Freeman and Dr. Newell have always had an adversarial relationship at best, and Gordon's hero status following the containment of Xen only served to inflame Dr. Newell's hatred and jealousy of him.
The timeframe for Todesangst is set shortly after Gordon Freeman's successful return from Xen. The episode opens with a cut-scene of Mr. Blackstone (a.k.a. the G-man) arriving at Dr. Newell's office. As we soon discover, Dr. Newell has had Mr. Blackstone in his control all along, and has his own intentions for the exploitation of Xen's biological uniqueness. . .
Its up to you, Gordon, to stop your evil colleague from unleashing the horror of Xen on humanity. . . if its not too late. . .

Create a new subdirectory named todesangst in your half-life directory. Make sure you spell it right! For most installations, the path will look like this: c:\sierra\Half-Life\todesangst. 2. Unzip the todesangst.zip file into the previously created todesangst directory. The final structure should look like this: ...\sierra\Half-Life\todesangst | +--maps intentionally empty directory | | | +--graphs intentionally empty directory | +--save intentionally empty directory | +--media | | | +--logo.avi Todesangst avi logo file | +--didusee.txt list of the neat things in todesangst (Spoiler alert!) +--liblist.gam game configuration file +--pak0.pak game map, sounds etc PAK file +--todes.wad new artwork +--todes2.wad new artwork +--todesangst.txt this file! +--walkthrus.txt walkthroughs of the entire game (Spoiler alert!) DO NOT unzip the files into your ...\sierra\Half-Life\valve directory! This will overwrite some of the key files needed to play half-life! 3. Now run Half-Life. In the main menu, select "Custom Game". 4. A table of all of your installed modifications will appear, including Todesangst. If it isn't in the table, re-check the directory structure you un-zipped the files into and the spelling of todesangst. 5. Highlight Todesangst and click on "Activate". The background and menu items will change to the todesangst theme. Click on "Done" to return to the main menu. 6. Click on "New game", select your skill level, and enjoy! Known Bugs ---------- 1. In the oceanarium map, the speaker dialogue will sometimes play after the completion of the action, which creates no real problem with the game other than making the scene appear silly. 2. During the last two cutscenes, the player is still able to jump and move, even though "freeze player" is selected for the cameras. This will not cause a problem unless you are trying to move during the playback. Thus, hands off the keyboard during the cut-scenes! The first map I made was the opening with Gordon in his quarters, way back in January of 1999! However, being a newbie to Worldcraft and compiling BSP's on an old AMD k6 machine was more frustration than fun. I took many breaks from this project, including a nearly year long hiatus for other interests, before revisiting it again late last year. By then, Worldcraft had been released to 3.3, Zoner had created his much faster compiling tools, and I had procured a much faster computer and graphics card. This, plus the wealth of info available online for serious Half-life fans rekindled my interest in this project again. It is impossible to overstate the significance Valve has had on the PC gaming experience with the creation of Half-life and their release of their SDK and other game info. Individuals who do not work for the gaming industry (like myself) have had an unprecedented opportunity to channel their creative expressions into a media that others can easily obtain and share in, too.
