For a moment there, I thought Thanata could do no wrong with those duel maps. And then, I took a look at Queen's Palace. This JK2 duel map just doesn't do it for me.
Thanata's consistancy shows here, but this time it just doesn't hit the mark. The design is simple and it's obvious that the room is like a council room of some sort. It's very dark and again, there are no obstacles and you can't fall off anywhere. So the map really helps the player focus on their duels. However, there's this skybox that just doesn't fit, in my opinion. The room itself is red and dark and then outside it's a bright, clear day - blue skies and green grass. With such big windows, you'd think that would brighten the room more. I suppose such a stark contrast just bugs me.
Once again, there is bot support included, but no new music. There are new textures, but those are all for the skybox that I don't like in this map. LOL Figures, huh? ;) Anyway ... the only thing I would really want in Thanata's recent maps is new music. Suitable music always sets the stage for a good duel. :)

It's simply some queendom on some lush and wealthy planet, somewhere in the universe. :) It's an "arena-like" duel map for those who suffer from claustrophobia. ;) Almost as big as the old Maje Pit hosted on many servers, there is plenty of room for a serious duel, or a training session. With it's 4 spawn points, it can also serve as a FFA arena, and wall walking is possible on all walls. Installation : Unzip QueensPalace.pk3 under your \GameData\base folder. Comments : One could find the windows a bit unrealistic because there is no apparent glass or forcefield to block them, only an invisible wall. This is not laziness or ignorance. It's simply that the bit of realism i would gain would be made at the expense of a big FPS reduction on slower systems, given the size and number of windows in this big room. Considering the fist purpose of this map, realism came second in my priorities here. This map, like the first two I released, was designed with the "no force duel" public servers in mind. Althought bigger in file size than the first two, it's still way below the 1M barrier (the pk3 is 519K), to ease the in-game download. It should have a decent FPs on slow machines. This very simple arena-like map draw most of its beauty from Justin Fisher's stunning skybox. Credits : Raven and Lucas Arts for the game, and the GTKRadiant community for the developping tool.
