File Description

Well, the name for this map is very appropriate, as it could definitely be described as 'Dark.' Not too sure on the city bit however. Whilst some features of a city can be found in this map, the overall effect isn't believable, and the level doesn't have the scope of most city levels. Spawning in, I was in an almost pitch black room containing a few boxes, of which the middle one was being lit by an invisible light source. Architecturally, I was expecting a little more than a few boxes in a square room, and the map does progress into some more lifelike areas, such as the 'city square' but for the most part it could use a lot more furnishing, especially the inside sections.

The cars aren't exactly perfect, and they dont move, but they are one of the nicer things in this map, and from behind they're quite believable :) - it's a shame about the big missing textures on the billboards in the main area, as it really spoils the scenery here. Additionally, the flaming barrels are something of a double-edged sword; they add some atmospheric lighting, but I'm pretty sure flaming barrels are supposed to be open-topped, or at least have a hole of some kind in them. The teleport in the phone-box doesn't seem appropriate either, but it does remind me of something.... ;)

Lighting generally is mediocre - there are some nice effects here and there, but there are also some sections where lighting is emitting from nowhere, and some sections are simply far too dark to see in, even with my brightness turned up beyond double. The luminous adverts do actually work for once though :) Overall? I dunno, the map just seems a little rushed - it's kinda hard to become immersed and feels a little sparse, atmospherically wise. However, it's a nice concept and I would like to see a v2 with an expanded cityscape, a nicer skybox, with surrounding buildings - things that make it seem like an actual city :) And keep with the night-time theme as well, perhaps change the music, it's a little loud at the moment.
