I love seeing new modelers hit the scene, even if their models are lacking in certain areas. As far as this hilt goes, what it lacks in design skill it makes up for with originality and uniqueness of concept. Well, as far as I know it's a unique concept. It's not your standard run-of-the-mill hilt, that's for sure.
This hilt's uniqueness is banked on the concept of a saber that is housed in a very tiny portion of the hilt, and the rest is simply open, but guarded with what the author refers to as 'pillars' (hence the name). Check the screenshots to see what I mean. Personally I think these are a bit toward the "obscenely long" end and could stand to be shortened a little (they remind me a little of Gorc's hilt from Dark Forces 2, for those who know what I mean). I think we can all agree that a hilt shouldn't be longer than your forearm, much less your entire arm. I would suspect this goof in sizing, if not actually intentional, is just an overlooked mistake. Sizing is hard, I know. I still can't get anything sized right on the first try.
Beyond that, I'd just say work on your texturing skills. The model seems quite efficient, poly wise (although you could even stand to reduce the sized on the 'pillars', since they're so thin), which is nice to see. No 50-sided cylinders as far as I can see, which is great. The texture also shows promise. I mean it's a bit ugly, sure, but instead of just being flat or whatnot it actually has some detail to it. I'd just say pick some better tools next time. The spray can isn't the best ;).
So in short, good work. Keep practicing, and keep up with those new hilt ideas! It's great not to see other concepts recycled. :)
