I’ve never actually seen a map of the exterior of the Jedi Temple, I know there are a few maps of the interior, but I’ve never seen a map of the exterior before. I can understand why too, such a map would have to be MASSIVE and that could cause problems making and compiling the map. But Several Sided Sid has succeeded in creating just a map! And the way he has got around potential problems is ingenious! ;)
Many of you will probably remember that in Episode 3 where Anakin storms into the Jedi Temple with his army of clones that it is night-time. Well that’s the way that Sssid has cleverly got around the potential difficulties with this map…its night-time! Since it’s night-time most of the map is very dark (except for the entrance area that you play in). Because of this the author has been able to get away with simply not constructing half of the map. If it had been daytime you would have had to make the entire exterior for it to look realistic. But since its night-time in this map, Sssid has only recreated the entrance area in detail, and some parts around it. After that it just fades into darkness, with a few lights on the wall to give the idea that the front of the temple actually carries on into the distance.
That’s the thing that I really love about this map, if feels like the entire exterior of the Jedi Temple is there, but really it’s only the main entrance area! A very ingenious solution to some very difficult problems with mapping such a building!
The actual entrance area isn’t an absolutely EXACT replica of the one from the films. There are four rows of massive pillar type things at the front (which in this map look fantastic!). In the film, these had giant carvings on them (which look like legendary ancient Jedi or something). In this map however there have been added instead pictures of four famous Jedi from the films; Yoda, Anakin, Mace Windu and Obi Wan. It has been made to look like the characters have been carved out of the stone pillars, which I think looks really cool. :)
This map is REALLY big, so there’s plenty of area for dueling or FFA’ing which is good!
There are a few things that bugged me a bit here though. One small one would be the sky. Although the ‘fading into darkness’ thing is a really clever way to avoid potential problems with this map, it does look kinda weird that the sky doesn’t have any stars. :S But I suppose that would give away where the edges of the map were.
The main thing though was the texturing of the Temple exterior above the four rows of massive pillars. Most of the exterior is textured in a kind of light coloured smooth stone texture, which looks really good. But above the pillars there’s a big red coloured stripe and some heavily patterned stone tile textures, which look out of place with the rest of the texturing. :/
But besides that another superb map here from Sssid! Don’t forget to see if you can find the famous can of Coca Cola that Sssid has dropped somewhere in this map! He must go through a lot of cans! :P
Another thing to note is that this map is part of a much bigger project by a team of mappers to create the Jedi Temple inside and out. I shall definitely look forward to seeing more work from that project! :)

Andy Reeves) Email Address : firstname.lastname@example.org (PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!) Music by : John Williams Map description : This is THE Jedi Temple as seen in the prequels trilogy... the galactic home of all the Jedi Knights, on Coruscant. Where all training begins, where all home life takes place for those in the Jedi Order. ================================================================ On the absence of city lights twinkling in the distance, this was for technical reasons. The Jedi Temple itself is sooo big that Radiant could not possibly cope with something on that scale, so I had to build just the illuminated 'playable' area at the base of the pyramid, where we see Anakin and the Clone Troopers advancing in Revenge of the Sith, and where we see Yoda and Obi Wan battling it out in the daytime. I considered a daytime map, but found the best way to handle the subject matter and the fact that I have only built a percent or two of the overall size of the place as it would be in reality (let's face it - this place is home to several thousand Jedi Knights at any one time!) was to fade away into blackness and suggest that there is more out there. Personally, I think it makes for pretty atmosphere :D ================================================================ File Size (.pk3) : 10,743 kb Date Released : (.v1) Thursday 18th May 2006 ================================================================ Notes : I would not have built this map at all had it not been for Guss, who very kindly invited me onto his Jedi Temple Team. The plan is to release a colossal Temple map, inside and out, and this is my part. I thought I'd release it early to show how the project is going and to whet a few appetites for more. Thanks man - this one taught me a lot! Also another big thanks to SathiroN, for his continuing support and for letting me use some of the textures he created for my Mos Espa Outskirts map. Hopefully sooner or later he will do the Jedi community a favour and release a compendium of his unfinished work!! (hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink...) ================================================================ And oh yes... for all those coca cola can fans out there - I think I left another one in here somewhere. I think...) ================================================================ * Play Information * New Textures : YES ================================================================ * Construction * Brush Count : 1,897 Entity Count : 2,020 Software used : GtkRadiant v 1.4 Known Bugs : None - please let me know if you find any :) Build Time : 10 WEEKS - BUT I PUT IT DOWN TO BEING A DAD AND NOT HAVING A LOT OF TIME ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS!!! BESIDES, THE LIGHTING ON THIS BABY TAUGHT ME THINGS I THOUGHT I ALREADY KNEW!! CHECK OUT THAT ENTITY-COUNT! I'll be kind here and suggest to other mappers that the best way to light some maps is by using dozens and dozens of tiny little lights, rather than a handful of massive ones. ================================================================ * How to use this map * Put the .pk3 file in your GamedataBase directory.
