In the 1940s and 50s the Vietnamese fought the French colonial occupation of their country in a war known as the Indochina war. The national liberation movement in the North of the Country was known as the Vietminh and was led by Ho Chi Minh, the French-educated Vietnamese Stalinist. The Vietminh utilized many Japanese weapons as the country was occupied by Japan in WWII, during which time the Vietnamese first began digging their famous tunnel networks and building a resistence movement. Following the Japanese withdrawral, the French attempted to reassert themselves as colonial rulers over Inochina, but were expelled from Southeast Asia after decisive military defeats to national liberation movements. France's main supporter, finacially and later militarily, intervened after the defeat of France in the conflict sometimes known as the Second Indochina War, but called everywhere the Vietnam War.
