File Description

The Gepard anti-aircraft tank was introduced in 1976 to replace the M42 "Duster" in German service. Based on a modified Leopard 1 chassis and therefore offering the same cross-country performance, the Gepard is intended to follow armored units providing short range low level air defense against aircraft and helicopters even while on the move. This task is performed in close cooperation with tracked Roland air defence missile systems. Operated by a crew of three, the Gepard has a combat weight of nearly 48 tons. Armament consists of two 35 mm Oerlikon KDA automatic cannons mounted on the turret sides. The rate of fire provided by the two barrels is 1100 rounds per minute. Since its introduction, several upgrade programmes have resulted in the latest A2 variant equipped with a digital fire-control computer and offering C3I capabilities (HFlaFüSys) as well as improved FAPDS ammunition (640 rounds). Additionally, 40 rounds of HVAPDS-T ammunition are carried for self-defense against armored ground targets. Sensors consist of an S-band search radar and a Ku-band tracking radar allowing operations under all weather conditions, both radars having a range of 15 km. A laser rangefinder is also fitted. The maximum engagement range is 5000 metres against aerial targets and 1500 metres against ground targets. To date, the Gepard is operational with the armed forces of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. 43 surplus ex-German Gepard were donated to Romania with the first delivered in November 2004.
