File Description

Citadel is a Single-Player Game. Deathmatch and Cooperative are not supported. Difficulty Settings are implemented, and they affect both the number of enemies per map and their overall effectiveness. All monsters have enhanced AI, pathfinding and strafing ability compared to standard Quake II, with several individual improvements: for example, Gunners always use the correct elevation angle to launch grenades, Tanks and Iron Maidens will fire rockets at your last known position, Enforcers have a faster attack sequence, Berserkers and Brains have a slightly longer attack range, etc. Most of these changes in behaviour come from Ground Zero and Lazarus, so most players should be already familiar with them.

First of all, make sure you have patched Quake II to the current, final version 3.20 - Citadel will not work with the retail version of Quake II, so download and install the patch if you haven’t done yet (an unofficial 3.24 patch does exist, and Citadel works fine with it as well). To install and play Citadel follow these steps:

1) Create a new folder named citadel in the Quake II folder (the same folder containing QUAKE2.EXE), and extract all files contained in this ZIP archive into it.

2) Right-click on QUAKE2.EXE and select Create Shortcut. Right-click on the newly created shortcut and select Properties. In the Properties, modify the Target line by adding +set game citadel (with one space before the "+" symbol, this is very important), as in the following example:

      "C:\Program Files\Quake2\quake2.exe" +set game citadel

3) Move the shortcut to wherever you want and double-click on it to run Citadel. You will be brought directly to the menu. Start the game and select your favourite skill level as in normal Quake II (or load a saved game).

Note for Knightmare users:

Citadel is fully compatible with the popular custom engine Knightmare. If you have Knightmare installed on your computer, use KMQUAKE2.EXE (instead of QUAKE2.EXE) to create your modified shortcut.

GAME STRUCTURE

The heavily fortified complex codenamed Citadel is made up by eight regular levels and a secret level (which is up to you to discover). Your primary objective is to locate the Strogg Reactor and destroy it, and possibly get out of the Citadel alive. To do so, you will have to accomplish a series of tasks in the form of secondary objectives, as detailed on your Field Computer. Similarly to a standard Quake II unit, some levels are dead ends which require to be visited only once, others have multiple connections and you will need to visit them several times to achieve your goals. Gameplay is mainly linear, though some levels allow to follow multiple routes. You can return to all levels that you have already visited looking for missing secrets and/or enemies.
