Planet Wolfenstein has posted a good set of interviews done for their Dear Helga column. "She" talked to a few big name mappers. I thought some people who don't go might be intrested. I'm the manager of Information Technology for a fairly small company in the (drum roll) insurance industry - suprise suprise, Connecticut is the insurance capital of the world. I just turned 34 this August, I'm not married so I still have the luxury of wasting huge amounts of time on games and mapping. I'm a tinkerer by nature so I enjoy anything computer related and I'm always looking to expand my knowledge in the field. I enjoy just about any live sporting event but I'm an avid hockey fan, and NHL playoff time is like Christmas for two months to me. I also like billiards, darts, I play guitar, read an occasional sci-fi or horror novel, watch any of the old WWII classic movies and of course play PC games. (Helga takes note zat Menzel ist single man.) Rummie: I was born and grew up in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. I received a degree in mechanical engineering in 1993 and currenlty work for an engineering company in Colorado. I am 31 years old. I enjoy film, golf, computer games, and I used to build and fly model airplanes. I actually built a 1/7th scale P-51D mustang and it flew. Unfortunatly my first crash left me with a $2500 pile of splinters so I have waned myself off the model thing and have begun just making things on the computer - much cheaper. As far as my phone number - 303-7.... wait a sec.....aren't you getting married? (Ja, ist true Helga vas to be married. Tell us some of your favourites vhich ultimately lead up to ze purchase of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Menzel: My First PC game was Wing Commander, I've been playing PC games since before the Original Wolfenstein. I was completely hooked on DOOM. The multiplayer aspect is what really got my interest. First person shooters are my favorite genre but I like many types of games, from RTCW to Everquest to Warcraft. Rummie: My gaming history? Do you have a few hours? I have a heck of a lot of games - mostly for the PC. The first PC game I purchased was Wasteland, an RPG set in post nulear war Las Vegas. I was pretty much hooked from that point on. I have always been a fan of first person shooters, ever since I played Doom for the first time - but of course isn't that what everyone says? I have purchased every game id software has ever made. Quake 3, though completely gorgeous was lacking something for me. When I heard id was working with Nerve and Grey Matter on RTCW I wasn't especially impressed. It did interest me enough however to dowload the beach test. After that there was simply no question I would be getting this game. CptnTriscuit: Lets see, I have been gaming ever since I was a wee lad - starting with the Nintendo entertainment system. When our family bought our first computer I was still young, but oh did I have fun toasting those Nazi's in Wolfenstein 3D. The Doom series were the last FPS games that I really played until RTCW, because I had a long streak of obsession with RPG's. I got back into FPS's after getting my newest computer and after fighting a long battle with an addiction to 'Diablo' and it's sequals. When the first multiplayer test of RTCW was released, it was a breath of fresh air for me. nib: I've been playing games as long as I can remember. Started back on the Atari 2600. One of the very first computer games I ever remember playing was, oddly enough, Castle Wolfenstein on the Apple IIc. This is the one where you threw little grenades and the terrible speaker made this ear-piercing shreak until it exploded and the "bad guys" would appear on the screen and say "SS". Played all the standards, Wolf3D, Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Half-life, Quake 2, Quake 3, yadda yadda. I still think Quake is one of the best FPS ever. As far as what made me pick up the RtCW box and buy it? Can't really say. Hadn't heard much about it as I had kind of fallen out of the FPS scene since I had been playing Asheron's Call. I think it was the id name and a bit of nastalga that made me actually pick it up. However, I know exactly what hooked me to the game. I loved the single player story and levels but what really got me was the multi-player. I had grown tired of the FPS scene because I found that they were all the same: run around and shoot anything that moves. That was fun when Quake came out but how many years ago wa that? I wanted something more in-depth. Counter-strike was a step in the right direction and I was hooked on CS for a while. But Wolf, IMO, has the perfect combination of team-work and just plain fragging. Even the other WW2 FPS that have come out are lacking in that area. Wolfenstein is a quality game in my book. Helga: How long have you been level designing, und vhich game inspired you to begin ze journey? Menzel: I started learning how to level edit with the release of Unreal. I remember reading how UnrealEd was supposed to be the easiest editor to learn so it was at that time I figured I'd start to see what it takes. I did a few levels with Unrealed. I was even lucky enough to have one of my DM levels included with the Klingon Honor Guard commercial release. Unfortunately I didn't have the time available to keep working on level editing so I stopped. I picked it up again with RTCW because I was blown away when I played the beachtest demo. Rummie: I made a few crumby levels for Quake that I dont' even have anymore. They were very small levels. one of which was a SP level. I really started making maps back in December of 2001. I am relativly new at this. I am sure that when you look at the history of my RTCW maps that you can see great strides forward with each map. The map pack that Nib and I are currently working on will show a culmination of all my skills, from texture making to model making and some seriously cool scripting. With each map I get better and it takes less and less time to create these maps. With this map pack, I hae had the opportunity to see how horribly my building techniques were when I started. I can honestly say that right now everything has finally come together and that the maps I am working on now are the most unique, fun, best performing maps I have ever made. To be honest I am having a hard time not releasing SE Airstrip at this point because we need to ge the other maps done. I am affraid that a lot of people are leaving the Wolf community. I seriously hope that our map pack will breathe some new life into the community and I really believe it has the potential to do just that. CptnTriscuit: lol, I suppose if I wanted to get to the root of it I would have to go back to the NES. I remember sitting in first grade doodling new levels to some of my favorite NES games. The first time I was able to actually crate something playable was when I was eight or so. There was an old DOS game called ZZT, which allowed you to create your own games, make levels, program monsters and treasure. I had alot of fun with that :) nib: Actaully, I'd have to say that RtCW is the first game I've ever really mapped for. I did create and release one map for Quake eons ago but I would hardly call it a "level". It was really just 4 rooms connected together with an elevator and some water. Helga: Vhat ist your current favourite RtCW custom level (not including your own)? Vas zer any level in particular zat inspired you to start designing levels of your own for RtCW? Menzel: Wow that's tough. There's quite a few out there I really like. I would have to say Schwalbe by Turbo and Pointy is my favorite custom RTCW level-it's probably the most eye pleasing map I've seen to date and I can appreciate how much time it took them to make it look that nice. No individual level in particular inspired me to start mapping for RTCW, it was the overall idea about the Wolfenstein engine and what can be done with the game itself that got me on the path to mapping again. Rummie: My favorite cutsom level... would have to be Tundra Outpost. Close seconds would be Nib's Bunker and Project Schwalbe. The level that inspired me to map for Wolf was mp_assault. That is probably my favorite offical map. CptnTriscuit: Hm...thats a thinker. I would have to say Tundra Outpost is my current favorite. As for inspiration, there were not any maps in particular that gave me the mapping bug. nib: Hmmm..Unfortunately I don't get around to playing wolf that much anymore. I think Rummie's Mitchell Down was good and I also think Turbo & Pointy's map, Schwalbe was good as well. Although, I honestly can't speak on its gameplay since I've only looked at it standalone. It is very visually appealing though. Helga: Helga knows zat it is difficult to get in actual play time vhen you are heavily involved in ze community in other vays. Do any of you play much for fun or as part of a clan? Menzel: I don't play nearly as much anymore, most of my time is spent on mapping. I do play Wolfenstein at work though, we have lunchtime games quite a bit so I get most of my fix there. I play more when I'm in between maps. I like to take a week or two off before I start on the next ideas, and I also play during the playtesting phase of maps. Rummie: I dont' play very often really. Until my closed beta test for SE Airstrip I hadn't played in a month. I dont' play in a clan but I do hang out on the Timelord server if I am playing and they all pretty much know me there. I appologize to my team constantly for being so out of pratice though. I am more of a hinderance on a team than help. =) CptnTriscuit: I play very often on a short list of server favorites. I like to keep my game up, I think I have gotten alot better in recent months after subjecting myself to a few servers with some VERY skilled players. I have just recently become involved in a newly formed clan, hopefully it will get of the ground. nib: Saddly, no.
