This updates any version of RTCW to version 1.4.
If you already have 1.33 installed, use this patch instead.
NOTE: Once you upgrade, you will be unable to play on servers running the previous version of the game.

INTRODUCTION Refer to this document for more information about the Return to Castle Wolfenstein 1.4 Update. For more general information, please see the Readme and Help files included with the original game. INSTALLATION & SET UP ISSUES 1. The update won't install: ============================ You must have a full retail version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein installed properly on your system before you will be able to install the update. 2. Issues with uninstalling then reinstalling RtCW: =================================================== After applying the 1.4 patch you will not be able to use the automatic uninstaller to completely remove the game from your system. In order to successfully remove the game you will need to run the included uninstaller and manually delete the game folder from your hard drive. After you've run the uninstaller located in the Return to Castle Wolfenstein group on your Start Menu, follow these steps to delete the folder. These instructions assume the game is installed in the default directory. 1) Open My Computer. 2) Go to the C: Files folder on your hard drive. 3) Locate the Return to Castle Wolfenstein folder. 4) Highlight it and click File, then Delete. 3. Issues with installing the patch to the wrong folder: ======================================================== When installing the 1.4 update, it is possible for you to browse and install to an incorrect folder. It is important that you only install the patch to where you have previously installed Return to Castle Wolfenstein. If this is not done, you will need to uninstall Return to Castle Wolfenstein before you will be able to install the patch again. WHAT WE'VE FIXED 1.>Fixes added in 1.4 ============================ Soldier/lieutenant would lose all weapon functionality when dropping weapon while throwing a grenade. Can't drop weapon while holding grenade now. Engineer would lose weapons by leaning while dropping dynamite. Using /kill while at MG42 forced player to stay in MG42 animation mode after respawn. Fixed buffer overflow crash caused by a long say command. Addressed some minor flamethrower exploits. Addressed some minor air strike exploits. Prevented centerview exploit on sniper rifle. Limbo chat now wraps. Lieutenant ammo pack gives 8 colt/luger rounds. No longer get impure client if connecting to server during map change. 2.>New features added in 1.4 ============================ Weapon Prediction enhancement for multiplayer games: Hitscan weapons (such as Pistols, Light Machine Guns and Rifles) have been balanced for connection latency, leveling the playing field between those on modems and players with a faster connection. Additional checking ensures that people on fast connections don't get shot once they've already hidden themselves from a modem user. Multiplayer Browser: Server "Ping" text colors have been changed to yellow or white. This will help determine the servers that have enabled the Anti-lag weapon prediction enhancement. -White "Ping" servers mean that Anti-lag weapon prediction is ON. -Yellow "Ping" servers means that Anti-lag weapon prediction is OFF. Filter Servers Button: Allows players to sort Anti-lag servers via a filter option. Players can now toggle the "Show Antilag" field to: Both, Yes, or No. -Both - Shows servers ALL servers regardless of Anti-lag settings. -Yes - Shows only servers with Anti-lag weapon prediction set to "1" which is on. -No - Shows only servers with Anti-lag weapon prediction set to "0" which is off. In-Game Options Menu: Now has a Server Info button that gives you the current settings of Anti-lag within your game. This gives players an in-game method of determining whether Weapon Prediction is on/off. New PunkBuster commands for improved admin control Improved speed for AutoDownload feature Added "Auto-Reload" option, selectable in the menu or the Cvar command \cg_autoReload Added ability to add web links for users to get more information about mods, maps, and servers Added voting configuration Added in-game server info in options menu: -Go to mod URL: Should point to the homepage of the mod (if provided). -Go to server URL: Should point to the homepage for the game server. NOTE: By clicking on the "Go to server URL" button, you will exit your current Wolfenstein session. The server info popup and the server connection error diagnostic screen show quick jump buttons to those URLs if defined. Improved Message of the Day (MOTD) support Added team based max lives 3.>Fixes added in 1.33 ============================ Medic Revival Sticking: Fixed bug where person revived by medic would be "stuck" to the medic 4.>New features added in 1.33 ============================ Improved PunkBuster WebTool: Improved PunkBuster WebTool support Added additional features for the PunkBuster WebTool for server admins. New Cvars: g_axismaxlives and g_alliedmaxlives - These dvars superscede g_maxlives when set. Used for setting maxlives independently for each team. g_fastres 1 (Defaults to 0) - Player instantly gets up, is instantly mobile, but is only invulnerable for a second vs. 3 seconds previously. g_enforcemaxlives 1( defaults to 1) - When a client enters a game, their IP gets added to a list. Any IP that is on the list is banned from connecting until the next round starts. This is to prevent people from disconnecting and re-connecting to get by the maxlives limitation. listmaxlivesip (debug console command) - Prints the current list of clients who's IP's are being enforced with maxlives. 5.>New features added in 1.32 ============================ ATI Truform: Enhanced support for ATI Truform technology New Multiplayer Map: Added "Tram Siege" Multiplayer Map Moving Objects: Added support for moving objects (trams) 6.>Fixes added in 1.31 ============================ Teleportation and Reviving Players Bugs Fixed Bugs introduced in 1.30 related to reviving players and teleportation, or warping, on certain maps have been fixed. These issues were a byproduct of a fix for reviving players on and around script movers (the giant doors in mp_assault for example). 77.>New features added in 1.3 ============================ Auto-Updater: With the 1.3 patch, we now have an "Auto-Updater." What this means is that any time there are future updates to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, you will be able to automatically download them from within the game. The updater only works from the multiplayer mode of Wolfenstein - not single player. If there is an update available, you will see an additional button added to the multiplayer main menu. Clicking on the button will allow you to download and install updates. Your Wolfenstein game will be restarted. The Auto-Updater will only be used to fix bugs and problems found after release. To look for new maps, tools, and other Wolfenstein downloads, please go to http://castlewolfenstein.com . PunkBuster: We're proud to be adding in the option of PunkBuster support into Return to Castle Wolfenstein. PunkBuster is an automatically self-updating Anti-Cheat software system. The PunkBuster system is designed to hold all participants accountable by scanning the game computers looking for known cheats, game hacks, and exploits similar to the way Anti-Virus software would scan a computer looking for a virus. PunkBuster is optional, however, without it you will not be able to play multiplayer on PunkBuster enabled servers. For more information about PunkBuster, please review: PunkBuster manual for Players PunkBuster manual for Admins "Ice" multiplayer map: Included with the patch is a new multiplayer map called "Ice." It allows for both objective play as well as a checkpoint mode. We've been having a lot of fun with this map - and we think you will too. MOD button: We've added additional support for "MODs." A MOD is a community created free modification of the game. Sometimes these add new story elements, new game types in multiplayer, or a wholly new game built on top of RtCW. The MOD button allows you to easily switch between different installed MODs. You'll find this new button under Options in both Single and Multiplayer. Check in with http://castlewolfenstein.com to find links to new MODs as they become available. 88.> Multiplayer issues addressed in 1.3 ======================================= Miscellaneous exploit fixes and optimizations: We've cleaned up many minor issues that have been uncovered since release of the 1.1 patch. Below is a list of some of the more significant issues squashed. Allow Download for multiplayer assets: It is now possible for you to turn on "Allow Downloads" from the MULTIPLAYER SETUP menu. This will allow you to download new maps, sound files, and PAK files directly from game servers. In other words, you no longer need to search the web for cool user-created Wolf maps. We strongly recommend that you restart your game after downloading new content to insure that it is used properly. We are not able to test or verify user content. Download at your own risk. We have no control over how big the downloads are. It is possible that the private server from which you are downloading the files from could shut down or change maps before the download is complete. If this happens, you will likely see a "GL_GetServer Command" error. This means your download has been interrupted and you were unable to get all the new assets. You should disconnect from that server, restart Wolf, and try again. Flamethrower bugs: A couple bugs with the flamethrower have been found and fixed. It is no longer possible to get the flame to travel through geometry, nor is it possible to multiply damage by bouncing the flame off multiple surfaces, nor will it be possible to prolong flame by chatting. Documents lost in doorways: We've fixed the bug that caused closing doors to remove objectives (documents) from the world. Picking up weapon is no longer a quick reload: Some people discovered that dropping and picking up a weapon was faster than reloading it. We've adjusted the functionality so this won't happen. Dying to recharge Power Bar exploit: When you die and are revived on the battlefield, the amount of charge in your Power Bar is retained from before you died. No longer kicked when out of lives due to "inactivity timer" It was discovered that people in a "Max Lives" game could use up all their lives, and then be kicked by the server due to inactivity. This has been fixed. Public messages getting echoed: A bug introduced in our 1.1 patch caused public messages to echo. This has been fixed. Fix for reviving players on moving objects: There was a visual bug caused when a medic revived players on or near large moving objects. This has been fixed. Localization fixes: We tweaked some translations and fixed some problems with the menus. Additional Nvidia GeForce support: Nvida GeForce owners can now switch the fog type under the OPTIONS / GAME OPTIONS from the main menu, or in-game using the OPTIONS menu. GL Extensions for Matrox users: Owners of Matrox G400 & G500 families can now enable GL Extensions in the Options menu. It is highly recommended that you download the latest Matrox drivers from http://www.matrox.com/. 99.> Single player issues addressed in 1.3 ========================================= Graphic corruption from flamethower or tesla gun: We fixed the corruption caused by leaving the guns idle on some cards. Problem loading games: It was discovered that hitting the "default" button in the Options menu made it impossible to load old saves. This has been fixed. Enhanced support for ATI Truform: Users of ATI Truform will find more options and the potential for more visible improvement. Once you've turned on ATI Truform, you can select different degrees from the Options menu. The game's performance will vary depending on hardware and the setting. Verify that your ATI card supports Truform, and make sure you have the latest drivers from ATI if you experience any problems. Localization fixes: We tweaked some translations and fixed some problems with the menus. Miscellaneous optimizations and fixes: We've cleaned up many minor issues that have been uncovered since release of the game. GL Extensions for Matrox users: Owners of Matrox G400 & G500 families can now enable GL Extensions in the Options menu. It is highly recommended that you download the latest Matrox drivers from http://www.matrox.com/. 10.>Issues addressed in 1.1 ========================== All of these changes are included with the 1.3 patch. You do not need to download an additional patch. Zombie Clients issue resolved: The reported issue with zombie clients filling spaces on servers left running for more than 24hrs has been resolved. Lieutenant grenade spamming solved: The bug allowing Lieutenants to throw grenades while in binoculars has been resolved. Issue with loading single-player maps fixed: There were many problems caused by launching single-player maps in multiplayer since they were not intended for multiplayer use. It is no longer possible to launch single-player maps from within a Multiplayer game. Various server stability issues implemented: Several bugs that caused servers to crash when left on for more than 24hrs were fixed. These fixes should greatly increase the potential number of servers available on a daily basis. Link to easily find future updates: Once you install the update, a new link will be added to your start menu. You will be able to use this to check in with http://castlewolfenstein.com to view any additional updates, maps, and other official downloads. Added Voice-Chat abuse fix: The max number of voice chats you can issue within 30 seconds is now defaulted to 4. Every time you issue a voice-chat, it looks back 30 seconds to make sure you haven't already issued the maximum number in that time period. In other words, if you repeatedly hit "VRA", you will get 4 "I need ammo!" calls in a row, and from then on, it will only issue one every 8 seconds with the default setting. This will allow for normal usage of voice-chats, but NOT allow someone to just continually holler requests a dozen times in a row (we all hate that). If a server would like to change the setting, the new cvar is "g_voiceChatsAllowed." The number given is how many voice-chats within 30 seconds. So the default is 4. A higher number will allow for more chats, while a lower number will allow even less. README ADDENDUM - TECHNICAL SUPPORT ISSUES 1.> My computer has a Nvidia GeForce card and a 3DFx Voodoo 2 card: ================================================================== Although the GeForce card will be able to handle RtCW, the Voodoo 2 card can not. We've found during testing that the Voodoo 2 card may cause instability. We recommend that you disable the Voodoo 2 card prior to playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein. 2.> I get the error: "HWCEXT: Not Implemented." =============================================== This is caused by having unused 3dfx drivers installed on your machine. For example, If you had a 3dfx based card installed but upgraded to a different card without removing the drivers first, you will likely see this message. We recommend that you remove the old drivers prior to playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein. 3.>I cannot install the Game of the Year Map Pack after applying the 1.4 patch ================================================================ We have recently updated the installer for the Game of the Year Map Pack to fix this issue. We suggest you either install the Map Pack prior to installing the 1.4 patch, or visit www.castlewolfenstein.com to download the updated version of the map pack. 4.>Message of the day (MOTD) character text cuts off screen =========================================================== There is an 80 character limit to the Message of the day. If your message of the day exceeds 80 characters, it will be cut off. COMMON QUESTIONS 1. Will this update impact my save games in single player? ========================================================== Yes, you may find that some saved games no longer load as expected. We've tried to minimize the impact, but we do not recommend that you load in saves from before the patch. 2. Where can I check for other updates, such as maps, patches, and demos? ========================================================== Once you install the update, a new link will be added to your start menu. You will be able to use this to check in with http://castlewolfenstein.com to view any additional updates, maps, and other official downloads.
