File Description
The United Federation of Planets was quickly gaining new territories at the beginning of the 24th century. Starfleet needed more ships to efficiently protect that territory. With the introduction of the Apollo class, Starfleet received ships equipped with long range early warning systems. Unfortunately the Apollo class was based on the best and most expensive Starfleet design: the Ambassador class. Only small number of Apollo class vessels were built, therefore they were used on fleet scale and that's why Starfleet needed a smaller ship with similar equipment. In 2315 when first Apollo was still in drydock, Andorian Shipyards introduced new starship design to Starfleet Command. The ship was a major modification to the proven Miranda refit class. The new ship was using completely rearranged Miranda hull together with nacelles and impulse engines from the Constitution class Yamato refit ship (also built in Andorian Shipyards). The rollbar and the torpedo launchers were replaced with three additional pylons and a huge sensor pod connected to them. Also the ship received stronger phasers than standard Miranda Mk2. Starfleet rejected the original design because the lack of heavy weapons. In response engineers responsible for the project decided to place a torpedo turret under that saucer section in the same place where the old sensor dome was installed before. This way the ship was equipped with two forward and one aft torpedo launchers and 72 photon torpedoes. The production of the class begun in 2316 and 26 ships were built before the project was canceled. Five Hornet class ships were lost in service, four were scraped and the rest was mothballed between 2357 and 2362.

Shortly after the Yamato class, the equivalent Miranda class refit, the Hornet, arrives here at Legacy Files. The major differences, compared to the original Miranda refit, are the new nacelles and the new Sensor dome, which is, according to tiptop's nice background story, a similiar one as it's placed on the Apollo.

With the competitions ending in about a week, tiptop enters the Starship competition with another ship of his, so don't forget to vote for this or any other ship you might prefer, when it's time to!
