Here is a piece of the interview:

Gamecloud - When the time came to start development of Unreal Tournament 2007, what were the development team's main goals?
Jeff Morris - Working with a franchise like Unreal Tournament means you need to balance the need to innovate with the expectations of the series fans. We want to advance what worked in the previous titles with new features, but at the same time retain what hooked UT fans since the original in 1999. We learned with the success of Onslaught in UT2004 that the mix of vehicles, on-foot combat, and a focused game type can expand what was traditionally thought of as a deathmatch focused title into something much bigger and, well, epic.
