Back in August 2005, Epic VP, Mark Rein, announced that Epic has been working on the Unreal 4 engine for 2 years. This news coming months before any games using the Unreal 3 engine are on shelves. Here are some pieces from the article:
Months before any games that use the company's wondrous looking Unreal 3 tech even hit the shelves, Epic VP Mark Rein has already spilled the beans on their plans for a follow-up. Not only is Epic planning on making a fourth iteration of the Unreal Engine, not only have they already started work on it, but they have been beavering away on Unreal 4 for over two years now. Don't expect to see any Unreal 4-powered games in the near future however, as there are still a minimum of another three years of development before Unreal 4 is unleashed on the world. Unreal 4 will appear on the next generation of machines to appear after what is currently being called next-gen: the PS3 and the Xbox 360
