Chinese gamers have a bone to pick with online censors after bones and skeletons disappeared from the Chinese version of popular online fantasy game World of Warcraft.
In the updated version, the bones symbolizing dead characters have been changed to graves and the skeletons have been fleshed. Mainland Chinese gamers, who waited six months longer than their U.S. counterparts, are outraged. A rep for The9, which runs WoW in China, told the Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis Daily that the changes were made in accordance with “China’s particular situation and relevant regulations ... to promote a healthy and harmonious online environment.â€
More than 500 gamers in China signed a post, vowing to boycott the game, Xinhua reported. Some gamers have set up a Save the Bones campaign on bbs.ngacn.com, a website for WoW players in China. Others have already started programming a patch that allows them to alter game models to see skeletons and bones on their screens again. The game, launched by California-based Blizzard Entertainment in 2004, has 8.5 million players worldwide, including more than 3.5 million in China.
